Age spots, also known as hyperpigmentation, are very normal and common in many people. They tend to appear in adults over 40. These small, dark spots are a type of hyperpigmentation (overproduction of natural pigment in the skin) and usually appear in areas that are most frequently exposed to the sun: the face, hands, arms and decolleté.

What causes age spots?

The most common cause of hyperpigmentation is exposure to the sun and its UV rays. Sunlight stimulates the production of melanin, the pigment formed by melanocytes or pigment cells.

Melanin absorbs this radiation to protect the skin against damaging UV rays from within. In case of normal (and protected) exposure to the sun, this process is sufficient and not harmful. However, if the skin is exposed to the sun too often, too long and/or without protection, the melanocytes become more active and a surplus of melanin is produced. This results in dark spots. Other factors, such as hereditary aspects, may also play a role in the development of age spots.

What can I do to combat age spots?

If you want to reduce dark spots, it’s best to build a routine that firstly fades the existing spots and secondly protects against the formation of new age spots.
