5 tips to prevent dry skin
On a cold winter day, you enjoy a long, hot shower but afterwards... your skin feels tight. You go for a swim in the pool? Afterwards, your skin can feel uncomfortable. We all know it, right? Your skin not only feels tight and dry but it also gets irritated and itchy in many cases. Want to prevent that? Follow our tips & tricks and prevent your skin from feeling tight and dry. Our goal? Skin that, no matter what season, looks radiant and feels wonderfully soft.
What causes dry, tight skin?
Every skin is different and reacts differently to external stimuli. First, there are those who naturally have dry skin: when too little sebum is produced, the skin starts to feel dry and tight. Skin ageing also affects whether or not we experience dry skin. As we age, the skin naturally produces less fat which results in slightly drier skin than before.
But the most common cause of dry skin is external factors such as too cold air conditioning or too high heating which makes the difference with the outside temperature too great. Our skin has to constantly re-regulate itself, which causes dry, irritated skin. By the way, long, hot showers are also inadvisable: you literally flush the skin's own layer of fat.
What are the characteristics of extremely dry skin?
The first step, of course, is to recognise the symptoms of dry skin. That way, you can treat and hydrate your skin optimally. Dry skin can manifest itself in different ways:
- A feeling of tightness
- Rough skin
- White flakes
- Dry spots
- Sensitive skin
- Dry skin rash
Do's and don'ts for dry skin
Dry and tight skin can be very annoying. The skin can itch or irritate, fine lines appear more quickly and make-up does not stay on as well. Fortunately, there are simple tips & tricks you can follow to make sure your skin feels a lot softer. Find out our tips below.
#1 Use the right face care products: prevent and treat dry skin
Dry, tight skin requires the right, nourishing products to strengthen the natural skin barrier and provide extra hydration. We list our best moisturising products.

Hyaluronic acid serum
The Remescar Hyaluronic Acid Serum hydrates the skin for up to 7 days. A real hydration boost: exactly what your dry skin needs. Thanks to this intense hydration, your skin becomes plumper and firmer and you regain a more youthful appearance.
Day cream with SPF
Strengthen the skin barrier throughout the day with Remescar Day Cream. This hydrating day cream nourishes the skin and prevents and reduces visible signs of ageing. Thanks to the SPF 20 in this cream, you are also protected from sun exposure.
Eye contour cream
Don't forget your eye contour: the delicate skin around the eyes deserves extra attention. So use our eye cream daily for optimal hydration of your eye contour area. Extra benefit: it softens crow's feet around your eyes.

Night cream
Put the skin to work at night too with Remescar Night Cream. This cream repairs, hydrates and nourishes the skin while you sleep. So you wake up feeling refreshed and with radiant skin in the morning.
#2 Drink enough water to hydrate
It might be a cliché, but drinking enough water is simply super important for the health of your body - and therefore for your skin. When you have dry skin, your body needs moisture to repair it. Moisturising products provide your skin with active ingredients that help it retain moisture, but of course your body has to contain moisture. So try to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day.
#3 Your shower ritual affects your (dry) skin
Did you know that your shower ritual has a big impact on your (dry) skin? Do you love taking a nice long and hot shower? Then, unfortunately, we have bad news for you: the hotter the water, the worse it is for your skin. So it's smart to turn the temperature down a bit and also shower as briefly as possible. Also, try to be very gentle with your skin.
Exfoliating your entire body and face every day? That really is a no-go! That's because your skin won't get the chance to recover. The way you dry yourself also affects your skin. Do you tend to rub your body with the towel? That is very bad for your skin. Try instead to gently pat your skin dry.
#4 Pay attention to the humidity in your environment
Dry air can make dry skin more sensitive and even irritate it. Therefore, try to keep the air in your home moist by heating a little less, for example. Especially in winter, this can be a challenge: with a few tricks, you can still make the air in your home a little more humid.
- Put a humidifier in your home
- Shower with the door open
- Let your laundry dry in the living room
- Put a bowl of water on the heater
- Put a bucket of water in the house
But even in summer, using an air conditioner can be treacherous. Avoid overusing an air conditioner - your skin is guaranteed to thank you.
