What are age spots?

Age spots are common in many people over the age of 40. The older we become, the more likely we are to develop age spots. The small, dark spots are a type of hyperpigmentation (overproduction of natural pigment in the skin) that usually occurs in the areas most frequently exposed to the sun: the face, hands, arms and cleavage.

What causes age spots?

Age spots are not caused by skin ageing as such. They are the result of oxidation of the skin. The sun is an important factor in this process. The sun can speed up the process of hyperpigmentation and make age spots more visible year after year. Hyperpigmentation spots form when there is increased activity by melanocytes (melanin-producing cells). Melanin absorbs this radiation to protect the skin against damaging UV rays. In case of normal (and protected) exposure to the sun, this level of melanin is sufficient and not harmful. However, if the skin is exposed to the sun for too long, the melanocytes become more active and a surplus of melanin is produced. This results in age spots. Hereditary factors may also play a role in the development of age spots.
